This Shit Happens on Band Camp

The True Stories They Never Tell You About Cadets

I started out as a teenage cadet in the NSW Army Cadet Band. Years later, they put me in charge of cadets. You’d think someone would’ve read my file.

We took the music seriously. We polished our boots, rehearsed until we knew our parts and practised marching in formation. Somehow, we still ended up with a tuba playing in the Sydney Harbour Tunnel and a set of cymbals that came in just late enough for everyone to notice.

From camps at Singleton to marching at the Royal Easter Show, these are the stories I kept telling my mates long after we’d packed the instruments away. Some of them still make me laugh halfway through telling them. A few took me a bit longer to find funny.

This Shit Happens on Band Camp is the first book in my series of funny true stories. It’s about the mates you make when you spend that much time getting things right together, and why the days that go completely sideways are usually the ones you remember best.
